When Corgi became Gas Safe

  As of April 2009, Corgi was replaced by Gas Safe as the UK’s official gas safety regulatory body. The CORGI gas registration scheme was brought to an end due to a review of gas safety in 2006, which led to a decision to change to a new gas registration scheme. All registered CORGI engineers should have been transferred to the new scheme.

 

Following this Gas Safe Register will be responsible for gas safety in the UK, unlike CORGI which represented safety across a number of sectors such as electricity and plumbing. After April, you should only allow boiler engineers to work on your heating systems if they have an official gas safe register membership card.

 

 If your engineer still has a CORGI card after this date, they are not registered; as a result they will be carrying out gas work illegally. So to avoid possibly unsafe work being carried out, when checking your engineers card, look for the Gas Safe logo. A yellow Gas Safe Register triangle, and no longer the orange Corgi registration badge. With this change in structure of the gas safety systems and policies and with the focus solely on Gas Safety, it is hoped that this will promote greater awareness of the issues of gas safety in the home. It is believed that some 13 percent of UK households will be unlikely to have had their boilers serviced, unless there is an obvious fault.
