Gas Engineer Courses – Level 3 Central Heating and Gas Installers Course
If you’re interested in getting Gas Safe Registered, RF Training has developed a level 3 fast track gas engineer course. Our gas engineer courses allow new entrants to the gas industry to fast track to Gas Safe Registration.
These gas engineer courses incorporate essential pipe fitting and central heating installation skills as well as the BPEC Gas Foundation Certificate.
The order of gas engineer courses is important as the BPEC Gas Foundation will provide an individual with critical foundation knowledge before entering the gas industry and achieving Gas Safe (formerly CORGI) Registration. These gas engineer courses are ordered as follows: BPEC Foundation followed by the ACS Initial gas engineer courses.
As a part of our gas engineer courses, RF Training will place you with a Gas Safe Registered Mentor who will help you build your on-site portfolio of evidence required for the gas engineer courses. Your mentor will also help you gain valuable on-site experience that builds on the skills learnt from our gas engineer courses.

Gas Engineer Courses – Level 3 Central Heating and Gas Installers Course Outline
Theory, practical and assessment in the following:
- Pipe bending and jointing skills for copper tube to industry standard requirements
- Pipe bending and jointing skills for steel pipe to industry standard requirements
- Installation and maintenance of cold water storage cistern
- Installation and maintenance of hot water cylinder
- Installation of central heating radiators and pipework
- Install and test steel pipe
- Install central heating electrical controls
- Installation and maintenance of central heating controls, i.e. pumps and motorized valves
- Testing and purging of domestic gas installations
- Combustion
- Flues and ventilation
- Gas pipework
- Controls for gas appliances
- Gas industry legislation
- Installation of domestic gas appliances
- Commissioning, servicing and maintenanceof domestic gas appliances
- Part L
Gas engineer courses – On-site Practical Experience:
Following completion of the BPEC Domestic Gas Foundation training programme, the candidate must now work with a Gas Safe registered installer who must observe and sign-off a set number of tasks to complete the candidate’s portfolio.
These tasks will include:
- Tightness tests with and without appliances
- Tightness test (medium pressure)
- Appliance services
- Appliance breakdowns
- Appliance gas rates (imperial and metric)
- Working pressure at meter checks
- Standing pressure checks
- Spillage tests
- Trace and repair gas leak
- Flue flow tests
- Identify correct ventilation
- Visual flue inspections
- Working pressure at appliance checks
- Appliance re-lights
The practical work will be signed off by a Gas Safe registered installer. If at any time the Gas Safe registered installer has concerns about the candidates performance, the RGI (Registered Gas Installer) is to take over the work and complete the task.
Gas engineer courses – ACS Training and Assessment
By proving a satisfactory knowledge and understanding of Gas Safety, the candidate can now be accepted into an ACS initial gas training and assessment programme. This must be completed over a further 10 day programme. The 10 day programme entails training and assessment for the following:
- CCN1 – Core Gas Safety
- CEN1 – Central Heating
- HTR1 – Gas Fires
- WAT1 – Water Heaters
- CKR1 – Cookers
- CPA1 – Flue Gas Analysers
Upon completion of the ACS assessments, the candidate can then apply for Gas Safe registration or apply for a position with a Gas Safe Registered organisation and work under their Gas Registration.
