Research released by the National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting (NICEIC) revealed that there is a huge leaning towards women looking to take on a trade over a profession. This is coupled with research also showing that women feel more comfortable around a female contractor making learning a trade as a woman more appealing.

The NICEIC conducted research asking 16-24 year old women where they want to progress in the careers. The research found that 63% of women polled said they are more interested in learning a skilled trade rather than a profession, because a trade stays with them for life.

When asked which trade they would most like to learn, electrician training came on top with the results showing women wanting to pursue the following careers:

Electrician (35%) Carpenter (21%) Plumber (20%) Builder (10%) Farrier (6%) The least popular choice was a bricky, getting just one per cent of the votes

This is promising news for many homeowners as the survey also found that many women would think twice before calling in a male electrician to carry out work, with some finding the experience daunting. The NICEIC found some strong figures for women to consider electrician training as according to the survey of 3,000 women:

47% feel intimidated when having to deal with a male sparky 11% confess that they’ll only have a man around if they’re not alone 50% feel more comfortable if faced with a female contractor 31% divulged they’re more likely to trust a lady electrician’s opinion over a man’s

These figures are good indicators that the nation is crying out for female electricians.
