    - Published September 6, 2010

population The UK will overtake Germany and France to become the largest country in the European Union with 77m people, it said.

Populations across the EU are set to see a decline as deaths overtake births from 2015.

But Britain is likely to prosper because it has strong growth from immigration and a younger average population; according to stats from Euro stat for the European Commission.

The commission’s report predicts that Britain’s population will increase by 25% on its current population of over 61 million by 2060.

According to the National Office of Statistics, the British birth rate is now at its highest since the post second world war baby boom.

Gordon Brown announced last week that in total three million new homes would be built by 2020 – up 250,000 from the previous plan.

Not enough young people are entering the trade to replace the older plumbers that are retiring.
